Commissioned research

Before you give a mandate

Not every question is worth a mandate. Some are worth a written answer, with the numbers underneath it, and the freedom to decide once you have read it.

One question, framed with you before we start. We rebuild the base from sources — registrations, price lists, filings, capacity — and hand you the position that follows from it, together with the pack to check it line by line.

What it covers

  • The question written down before anything starts. If we cannot write it, we say so rather than begin.
  • The base rebuilt from sources: registrations, price lists, filed accounts, capacity — not the picture that is already circulating.
  • A memo with the position: the call we would make, and what would change it.
  • The source pack: every number traced to where it came from, so your team can challenge ours.

What it does not cover

Said here rather than discovered later. Each of these is real work, and each belongs to a mandate.

  • Field interviews with operators, dealers and suppliers. That is where the desk view usually breaks, and it is what opens with a mandate.
  • A model you can run against your own assumptions.
  • Being walked through the decision. This leaves you an answer, not a process.

How it runs

  1. 01

    Frame

One question, written and agreed. This is the gate: an answer to a question nobody could write is worth nothing.

  2. 02

    Rebuild

The base, from the sources up. Where a number cannot be traced, it is marked as missing rather than filled with an estimate.

  3. 03

    Hand over

The memo with the position, and the pack behind it. Yours to keep, and to disagree with.

The terms

  • The scope is fixed before we start, and so is the price.
  • Three things set it, and you get to see them: what you are asking, how reachable the data behind the answer is, and how deep you want to go. We weigh the three with you before naming a number.
  • If a mandate follows, what you paid for the research comes off it.
  • The research is yours. We do not resell it, and we do not put it in the newsletter.
